First Installment: Face Shape

Determining your face shape is particularly helpful in selecting the hairstyle that best suits you (although simply looking at it will do the trick).
  • Measure your face across the top of your cheekbones, Write down the measurement on a piece of paper.
  • Measure across your jaw line from the widest point to the widest point. Write down the measurement.
  • Measure across your forehead at the widest point. Generally the widest point will be somewhere about halfway between your eyebrows and your hairline. Write down the measurement.
  • Measure from the tip of your hairline to the bottom of your chin.
Once you’ve measured your face, then look at the measurements, do you have a particular pattern? Well if so then, hopefully you’ve found your FACE SHAPE.

Here are the types of FACE SHAPES:
  • OVAL: Length equal to one and a half times width.
  • ROUND: Your face is as wide as it is long. This may vary a little but generally the measurement is close.
  • RECTANGLE: Longer than it is wide.
  • HEART: Narrow at the jaw line, wide at the cheekbones and forehead.
  • TRIANGLE: Reverse of the HEART SHAPE.
  • SQUARE: Your face is about as wide as it is long.
  • DIAMOND : Widest at cheekbones, narrow forehead and jaw line of approximately equal widths.

Oval

Oval - Many choices

As its name implies, the oval-shaped Face is longer than wide, with a jaw that is narrower than the cheekbones. Because the oval shaped face has no dominant areas and is so proportional, this face looks good with just about any hairstyle, length or texture,

OVAL FACE SHAPE
  • The “Perfect Proportion” and is widely-held as the most esthetically pleasing balance of proportion.
  • The OVAL FACE is roughly 60% longer from chin to hairline than from cheek to cheek.
  • In the world of beauty and cosmetics, it is considered the IDEAL SHAPE, because the proportions of an OVAL FACE, means that virtually any hairstyle will be flattering.
  • This includes bangs, which can be worn in just about any style. Of course bangs for OVAL FACE SHAPES should be chosen with an eye for hair type, texture, length and condition.
  • Avoid covering up your features with heavy bangs or too forward-directed styles.

Round

Round - Avoid width

The round-shaped face has a wide hairline and fullness below the cheekbones. The client may be overweight and the neck may appear short. A geometric or linear style looks very good. Add height and long wispy sides to make the cheeks look narrow. Sides and nape comb close.

ROUND FACE SHAPE

  • The ROUND FACE SHAPE is considered by many women to be the least desirable and is often confused with excess weight.
  • The ROUND FACE is noted being less than 60% longer vertically than horizontally and by having rounded lines in the forehead and jaw areas.
  • Full-looking face with a round chin and hairline, typically identified with the widest points at the cheeks and ears.
  • The most flattering bang styles tends to be built upon long softly layered or feathered bangs that gently hug the cheeks to minimize round cheeks.
  • Skillfully constructed bangs can add contour to a ROUND FACE SHAPED features.
  • Hairstyles with fullness and height at the crown. Off-centered parts. Short hairstyles with a swept-back direction will generally look best on a ROUND FACE.
  • Avoid, chin length hair with a rounded line that mirrors the face’s circular shape.

Oblong

Rectangle/Oblong - Add softness

The oblong-shaped face has a long and narrow bone structure. An oblong facial shape often has a long, thin neck. Use a fringe or half-bang across the forehead by creating the soft waves or curls in the crown or nape areas. This helps to create the illusion of an oval.

RECTANGLE/OBLONG FACE SHAPE
  • The RECTANGLE/OBLONG FACE SHAPE is another common shape and is characterized simply by being more than 60% longer than it is wide.
  • The RECTANGLE/OBLONG FACE is one of the most identifiable face shape and can be angular or rounded. The key with a rounded RECTANGLE/OBLONG  FACE is to introduce a style with added width and an emphasize on horizontal lines.
  • For the angular version smooth curves should be included to create contours.
  • This FACE SHAPE is long and slender and has about the same width at the forehead and just below the cheekbones.
  • RECTANGULAR/OBLONG faces may have a very narrow chin or a very high forehead.
  • Soft wispy bangs will shorten the appearance of the length. Full at the sides of your face will add width to the look of your FACE SHAPE.
  • Short to medium lengths will add fullness to the side of your face and layers work great you’re your face shape, since it will soften the lines in your face.
  • Avoid too much hair length because it will make your face look even longer. Unless you tease you’re a hair a lot to avoid the pronounced square facial lines.

Heart

Heart - Add volume at chin

The heart-shaped face is characterized by a wider forehead and a narrower chin. Bring some hair onto the forehead to disguise its width. Keep hair close to the head at the eyes but make it slightly full around the jaw, and below and in front of the earlobes.

HEART FACE SHAPE
  • The proportions may be very ideal with regards to the horizontal and vertical dimensions, the width of the upper section of the head compared to the jaw area is what makes the determination for this face shape.
  • In dealing with this FACE SHAPE, the key is to minimize the upper portion of the head while creating volume and a horizontal line at the jaw area for width.
  • A HEART FACE is wide at the temples and hairline, narrowing to a small delicate chin.
  • Swept-forward layers around the upper face and gentle wispy bangs are a great look on your.
  • Avoid too much height at the crown since it will give the appearance of a longer and narrower chin.
TRIANGLE FACE SHAPE
  • The TRIANGLE FACE SHAPE is characterized by a wider jaw area and a narrower forehead.
  • In most cases, the best course of action is create fullness and volume in the fringe area.
  • This style should also taper to minimal volume at the lower areas of the face or otherwise camouflage the width of the jaw line.
  • Wider bangs that are feathered, wispy or texturized can help to balance the face and create more of an OVAL SHAPE.
SQUARE FACE SHAPE
  • The SQUARE FACE is characterized by having strong angles at the jaw and forehead.
  • The proportions in height and width of the face may be close to the ideal, but the angles at the lower and upper sections of the face are the key.
  • In more pronounced cases, the FACE SHAPE can be easily recognized, but is often mistaken for other FACE SHAPES unless the shape is obvious.
  • Dealing with the SQUARE FACE SHAPE requires implementing a style that features curves at the forehead and jaw line with some volume on the top and the sides to soften the angles of the face.

Diamond

Diamond - Reduce width at sides

The diamond-shaped face has a narrow chin and forehead with wide cheekbones. Diamond shaped faces need narrow sides and fullness at the chin. Bobs work very well. Avoid height on top or volume on the sides. Use some fringe or bangs to cover narrow forehead.

DIAMOND FACE SHAPE
  • The DIAMOND FACE SHAPE is possibly the most misidentified shape except when dealing with the most pronounced cases.
  • The DIAMOND FACE has a narrow forehead area and a narrow jaw line with wide cheekbones.
  • A style designed for this face shape requires volume in the upper and lower corner of the face.

Pear

Pear - Add volume above jaw line

The pear-shaped face is characterized by a small or narrow forehead and a rather large pouchy-appearing jaw line. Comb hair to add width from the eye level through the crown of the head. Set and comb hair close to the head on the sites and at the nape.

When it comes to dealing with FACE SHAPES if you seem unsure in what category you belong in just remember the following tips:
  • Use soft curves and waves to minimize angles in the face shape.
  • Use horizontal lines and curl to add width to a narrow area.
  • Use vertical lines and lift to add height to a shortened or round face.
  • Use styling elements such as curved bangs, asymmetry, off-centered parting to camouflage or distract from prominent features.

So Chic!!!

Topshop, Mango, or Zara? What would you choose?

I find Topshop a heaven for young girls. Mango slides in between. I found some really good pieces there which are comfortable, fab and fit. But then, I personally prefer Zara. This Spanish fashion chain boasts a variety of stylish outfits ranging from classics, ruffled, laid-back, and so on. Zara also carries a men's line and a kid's line so it would be like a one-stop shop for the family. The staff are also courteous and accomodating. Zara is a heaven for young professionals (like me ^_^ ) since they have everything that you need (from top to bottom, head to foot). Also, they have these must-have pieces that I'm going to keep like forever^_^.

But of course, it depends on your style. Next for me would be Mango. Then third would be Topshop...Anyways, the 3 stores are all fabulous. It just depends on your personal preferences.

If you're looking for stunning pieces, I recommend Zara (a big fan!). Please do visit their stores. I'm sure you'll discover lots of great finds there!
